NFFN Cymru welcomed Andrew RT Davies MS, Welsh Conservatives spokesperson for Farming and the Environment, to Cwm Risca Farm near Bridgend on 18 June for a discussion on farming policy, the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS), and the practical benefits of nature-friendly farming.
Hosted by the Anthony family, the visit showcased a decade-long transition to a lower-input, regenerative farming system. Discussions focused on how increased crop and grassland diversity, alongside rotational grazing, has enabled the farm to reduce fertiliser, chemical and livestock treatment use while maintaining production.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the SFS and wider agricultural policy. It was encouraging to have a constructive conversation about the value of some SFS universal actions, including benchmarking and continuing professional development. We also explored opportunities to improve future scheme delivery and support for farmers.
By bridging the gap between on-the-ground practice and political policy, visits like this are vital. NFFN Cymru looks forward to continuing this constructive dialogue with Andrew RT Davies and his team, ensuring the upcoming SFS rewards farmers for nurturing the land while keeping food on our tables.
