Government overlooks farming’s role in climate protection, food security and economic growth.

The Government has missed a huge opportunity in the Autumn Budget to invest in the UK’s farmed landscape, an investment essential for strengthening the economy and protecting communities from climate change.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves outlined the Government’s tax and spending plans for the coming year on Wednesday 26 November, yet farming barely featured.

According to the NFFN, the countryside and rural economy have been largely excluded from the Government’s efforts to boost growth and ease the cost of living, despite their immense potential to deliver long-term benefits for the nation.

A well-supported, nature-friendly farming system provides multiple benefits for society, yet the Government has almost entirely overlooked the role of the countryside in driving growth and resilience.

With farming increasingly hit by floods, heatwaves and droughts - and millions struggling to afford essential foods - Britain urgently needs a clear, stable strategy to secure the future of food, farming and nature.

Our CEO, Martin Lines, said: “This Budget represents a huge missed opportunity to recognise the enormous value our farmed landscape can deliver for the economy.”

“A well-supported, nature-friendly farming system provides multiple benefits for society, yet the Government has almost entirely overlooked the role of the countryside and rural economy in driving growth and resilience.”

The NFFN says that investing in nature-friendly farming delivers substantial long-term returns. Farms can provide renewable energy, natural flood management and carbon sequestration - all of which reduce costs for the public and help protect communities.

“We simply have to invest in our landscapes,” Martin Lines concluded.
