When an event is sold out within 12 hours you know you’re in for a great day! And that’s exactly what was had at our Whole Farm Regenerative Grazing Workshop with the excellent Caroline Grindrod. NFFN Cymru Manager, Rhys Evans, and Tir Canol's Naomi Heath reflect on the workshop. Scroll down for Welsh language version.
This event, a collaboration between NFFN Cymru, Tir Canol, FWAG Cymru and Coed Cadw, explored why regenerative grazing is most successful when applied using a ‘whole farm system’ approach.
Caroline - who’s been involved in developing sustainable food and farming businesses for over 20 years - presented a distillation of her knowledge about grazing livestock and ecosystem management, and how it can increase farm resilience and productivity. From an upland perspective, Caroline explained why the soil, plant, animal, and farm ecosystems are interlinked and must work together to successfully reduce inputs and increase pasture productivity.
Whilst it was a short course, it helped build on participants knowledge. One person summed this up well “I feel like this event has allowed me to be more confident in what I am doing and that I can do more of it".
The workshop also had a practical element and included a visit to a local farm, Lle’r Neuaddau, to observe soil and root conditions. A big thank you to Rheinallt Jones for showing hosting.
The overall workshop was a joyful learning experience for many, one participant joking, “You know I am digging a hole up a hill in the rain, and here I am having the best time learning!”.
