Led by Lindsay Whistance, a livestock researcher focusing on how enriched landscapes offer high welfare conditions for farmed animals, this session will look at how trees in fields can offer shade and shelter as well as an important source of fodder. We’ll unpack the responses stock make in different weather conditions and show how simple changes to shade, shelter and browse opportunities can support good welfare and productivity.

This webinar offers practical, evidence‑based advice, and is designed for farmers wanting to get more from their grazing systems.

Dr Lindsay Whistance has a background as a stockman and gained a PhD in animal behaviour and has been working in animal science research for 25 years. Her research interests include behaviour, welfare, human-animal relationships, and ecologically resilient systems which promote ‘a life worth living’ for farm animals. Current research includes investigating the role of trees in temperature regulation, body maintenance benefits and the nutritional/medicinal opportunities from browse as well as methods of feeding and processing tree fodder.
