Nature means business. Land management is a significant tool in tackling the climate and biodiversity challenges we face. With one-third of Northern Ireland's farmland being upland, finding ways to farm that improve habitat conditions while protecting water and air quality will be essential for a sustainable farming future.
Come explore Slievenacloy nature reserve, one of Northern Ireland's finest species-rich grasslands, with ecologists and nature-friendly farmers Michael and Judy Meharg. Hear how they run a profitable farm business through conservation grazing Irish moiled cattle, enhancing biodiversity whilst producing high-quality meat. Slievenacloy is an area of high nature value in the Belfast Hills and is owned and managed by the Ulster Wildlife Trust.
Michael and Judy can show first-hand how it is possible to manage land with a range of positive outcomes: a profitable business, high-quality food and maintaining designated habitat, all being achieved simultaneously through breed choice, grazing planning and ecological knowledge.
This event will highlight how this is being achieved whilst enjoying a guided walk through rare species-rich grassland habitat on the outskirts of Belfast.
Michael Meharg is an ecologist and a nature-friendly farmer. Michael has a keen passion for the natural world, along with the cultural history of farming in Ireland.
No evening meal provided, but teas, coffees and light snacks will be available.
The event is run in partnership with Danske Bank and the Nature Friendly Farming Network.
